Broome County Land Bank receives grant to demolish 17 blighted properties

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - More blighted properties in our area are subject to the wrecking ball thanks to a grant from the New York State Attorney General.

A.G. Eric Schneiderman announced a $650,000 award to the Broome County Land Bank last week.

The Land Bank's Board met Tuesday to officially accept the funds and swear in some new members.

The organization plans to use the money to acquire and demolish up to 17 foreclosed or abandoned properties in the urban core of Johnson City and Binghamton's Westside.

"The funding that the Attorney General provides to the Community Revitalization Initiative is our main source of funding. So, we're greatly dependent upon it and we are very thankful that he continues to provide support for us," said Executive Director Margaret Scarinzi.

Meanwhile, one of the Land Bank's highest profile projects to date is seeing significant progress.

On March 1st, it closed on its sale of the former Sheraton Hotel in Binghamton to developer 50 Front Street Associates.

Asbestos removal is currently underway with demolition expected to begin in the coming months.
