What is the Coronavirus?
The Coronavirus also known as COVID-19 is a disturbing global development. Coronaviruses are a massive family of viruses. Some of them cause illness in humans and others primarily infect animals. Until recently, there have been rare instances where animal coronaviruses have been found to infect people. In turn, we can infect one another as humans. The outbreak of COVID 19 that is surging globally at this present time, is suspected to be caused by this rare situation becoming a common occurrence.

The novel coronavirus that was first identified in China and has now been found in close to 70 locations around the world. The United States now has a growing number of daily cases including here in New York. The virus at this point is not spreading widely in America, however, new cases are being reported daily within our country. With current facts and trends, our current global circumstances make it more than likely that the virus will likely cause a pandemic.The CDC has created a risk assessment. Please note: the CDC will update the risk assessment as needed.

Current Risk Assessment as of March 4th, 2020
·       For most of the American public, who are unlikely to be exposed to this virus at this time, the immediate health risk from COVID-19 is considered low.
·       People in communities where ongoing community spread with the virus that causes COVID-19 has been reported are at elevated, though still relatively low risk of exposure.
·       Healthcare workers caring for patients with COVID-19 are at elevated risk of exposure.
·       Close contacts of persons with COVID-19 also are at elevated risk of exposure.
·       Travelers returning from affected international locations where community spread is occurring also are at elevated risk of exposure.

Personal Care and Protective Measures
·       Wash your hands frequently
·       Cough/sneeze into your elbow
·       Stay home if you are sick, and don’t return until you are fever-free for 24 hours without medication
·       Get your flu shot
